Abbyy Finereader 9.0 Professional – Portable

ABBYY FineReader Professional Edition v9.0.0.724 + ABBYY ScreenshotReader

Official site:

- One of the best OCR programs. With this you can scan documents and save them as pure text or HTML files, for example. Also Word and Excel are supported, and the app doesn’t miss any structures of the document. You don’t necessarily have to scan documents, but can read them from PDF or picture files aswell.
- Only the help files are removed. EVERYTHING ELSE is left intact. This means all program languages, and all >100 OCR languages! Yes, even Udmurt, Lappish and others you’ve never heard of.
- Built using ThinApp v4.0.4.

Known issues:
- Might take 10-20 seconds to start up. Just be patient…
- The app seems slow and unresponsive sometimes, but that’s not a portable issue.
- Launching installed versions of Word or Excel from within the portable doesn’t work very well at all.
- You might experience some strange error messages when scanning (because of ThinApp incompatibilities with WIA and TWAIN), but I tested, and scanning works after all. At least on my HP PSC 1350.

FAQ:

What is a Portable?
- A portable is a sandboxed application. This means the whole program is contained in a single executable. There is no need to install the application, just unzip and run. Also, a portable doesn’t pollute your system with files or registry keys.

What is ThinApp?
- ThinApp is a software used to make portables. More info:

http://www.vmware.com/products/thinapp/

What is the folder that is generated when the portable is run?
- This is the sandbox and stores all modifictions to the filesystem and the registry made by the app. You can safely delete it, in that case the portable will just revert to the state it was in when you downloaded it.
